You can feel the present connect to the past especially in this part of the city. Zalaegerszeg’s castle, which was replaced by a baroque town hall, used to stand in the place of the historical city centre. In addition, it is here where the nation’s very first sculpture of Ferenc Deák is located, guarding the library named after him right in front of it. The buildings and the public works of art there may rightly receive the attention of the general public.

Sights to see
•    The country’s first sculpture of Zala-born Ferenc Deák, created by Baron Miklós Vay.
•    “The Wise Man of The Nation” stands in front of the library, which was constructed in 1967 and named after him
•    The Zalaegerszeg Court of Justice is located in the baroque building built in 1730-1732, previously functioning as County Hall. This is where the Castle of Egerszeg used to be found.
•    The “Salt House” was built in the 18th century to store salt, and it was also used as an ironmonger’s shop. However, little is known about the bustling commercial life that took place here. It was reconstructed several times throughout the centuries, and it has housed offices and shops ever since.
•    The Göcsej Museum is both literally and figuratively one of the great buildings: it is bordered by the courthouse in the West, by the Maria Magdalena Parish Church in the South. The museum cannot be visited currently due to reconstruction.
