Over the centuries – a walk from Deák Square to Dísz square
Tours
You can go on this special time traveling trip in the present, in the streets of Zalaegerszeg, from the former historic inner city to today’s modern city centre! Leave on two feet or wheels, every step will be accompanied by architectural, artistic, historic treasures!
You can feel the present connect to the past especially in this part of the city. Zalaegerszeg’s castle, which was replaced by a baroque town hall, used to stand in the place of the historical city centre. In addition, it is here where the nation’s very first sculpture of Ferenc Deák is located, guarding the library named after him right in front of it. The buildings and the public works of art there may rightly receive the attention of the general public.
The passage of time is most easily observed in Zalaegerszeg at the Mindszenty square, where the Maria Magdalena Parish Church is permanent, and its surroundings are temporary. No matter the fires, construction, a new road, the church always “prevailed”.
There was a restaurant in the Turkish era that stood at the place of the hotel, which was replaced by an Episcopalian inn in the 18th century. Veszprém’s bishop, the town’s feudal lord had the corner building built, which was reconstructed in 1894 to become today’s three-star hotel. You can try the local specialties and the wine that go well with them. Lujza Blaha, a renowned and famous singer who received the title of ‘the nightingale of our nation’ for her achievement had performed here. Moreover, the first time local people had seen a silent movie was also here, in 1903.
Two buildings, two entrances, one shared courtyard.
The Quarter house is one of the oldest buildings in Zalaegerszeg. Interestingly, it was constructed to provide accommodation for soldiers according to Maria Theresa’s regulation, although it was never used by the military. The neighbouring archives were finished more than a century later, the Banquet Hall is located on its upper level.
Summer shows at the open-air theatre await those interested at the building complex with neo-baroque and neo-classicistic elements.
The square is small, but rich in sights! Look around and find points of interests across Onion Helm Ispita and the Post Palace: the bust of Kossuth Lajos, the great stateman, next to it the building of the former savings-bank, on whose facade you can find old postcards from Zalaegerszeg.
Connected to the inner city: Europe Square stands in the centre of Europe, in the centre of the city, joining the town’s current main square, Dísz square. It is quite interesting that it was inaugurated in 1996 on the occasion of Europe Day.
Although Deák Square used to be the centre of our historic inner city, the modern town’s centre is Dísz Square, which is not only a beloved meeting point, but also one of the venues for major municipal events.
The iconic Tulip fountain standing in the middle of the square has become one of the symbols of Zalaegerszeg, similarly to the Maria Magdalena Church.
